The Malmesbury Emigrants: In pursuit of the American Dream

The Malmesbury Emigrants: In pursuit of the American Dream

As America celebrates 250 years as an independent nation, Sue Poolman traces its connections with Malmesbury, beginning with the earliest settlers in New England and Virginia in the 17th century and continuing with the later migration of more than six hundred people to Pennsylvania and Ohio. She examines their enduring legacy in both countries and the links that continue to this day.

Previously Sue Poolman has done extensive research into the surprisingly large number of local Malmesbury people who went to the Cleveland area in the US in the 19th century some of whom became very successful in the oil business. This new talk includes an exploration of the previous departures from Malmesbury to America to add to these fascinating stories. Her earlier book – The Cleveland Connection – is available in the Museum and via our website Shop.
