Cllr. Patrick Goldstone, Mayor of Malmesbury, chaired a meeting in the Town Hall to decide a united strategy for the town to tackle large development threats. The meeting included representatives from Malmesbury & St. Paul’s Without Residents’ Association, Malmesbury Civic Trust, Malmesbury & District Chamber of Commerce, Malmesbury River Valleys Trust, Malmesbury & District Conservation Group, several Town Councillors, and Wiltshire Councillor Simon Killane.
The meeting had been called following a Town Council Planning Committee meeting on 14th September when over 200 members of the public expressed their opposition to large scale residential development threatened for the north of the town.
Cllr. Goldstone said after the meeting:
“As a group we are united in our concern by the threat posed to Malmesbury’s social infrastructure by the building of 200 or more houses in one go. Our schools are already under grave pressure if not full, the road network is not sufficient in the town, and utilities are facing overload. Will our medical services be able to cope with a large expansion of population? Any major development scheme must be very carefully planned and not just dumped on the town without careful forethought.”
The meeting agreed as a first step to research and audit the present infrastructure in Malmesbury and its immediate surroundings.
