Malmesbury Town Council is keen to build on the Sustainability Event held last year, and to identify energy savings, economically viable renewable energy production processes, and life style changes, which if implemented in Malmesbury and more widely could contribute to reducing Climate Change.
Malmesbury has Fairtrade Status since 12th July 2008
A Fairtrade Town is a town, city, village, county, zone, island or borough that has made a commitment to supporting Fairtrade and using products with the FAIRTRADE Mark.
Community organisations, faith groups, businesses, schools and individuals all contribute to making this area a Fairtrade Town by pledging to do what they can to support Fairtrade and promote the FAIRTRADE Mark
There are now over 400 Fairtrade Towns as well as more than 200 areas campaigning towards status. The phenomenon has not stopped at the border. There are now Fairtrade Town campaigns in 17 countries around the world and all of these have been inspired by the example in the UK. Visit the
On-going discussions to identify any options for allotments or community projects are being examined. If you are interested in either of these areas please contact us.
Energy advice and reducing the carbon footprint
One of the best sites for obtaining information on energy is here: http://www.cat.org.uk/
This site has a multitude of tips for wind power with individual kits to generate electricity and advice on how to clean your house with eco-friendly products.
This site has a lot of information but the key statistic is this:
In 2008/9 Wiltshire sent to landfill 58& of its waste (129,000 tonnes) 16% was Composted , 24% Recycled and 2% recovered. This is an improving trend as 2004/5 73% went to landfill.
The “green cones “have the added benefits of being a food digester rather than just a composter so can recycle your kitchen waste.
Food Waste
EWP -FYI
Love Food Hate Waste is the ‘Waste Not Want Not’ of the modern day, providing handy tips, advice and recipes for leftovers to help everyone waste less food.
8.3 million Tonnes of food is thrown away by households in the UK every year.
Reducing food waste is a major issue and not just about good food going to waste; wasting food costs the average family with children £680 a year and has serious environmental implications too.
If we all stop wasting food that could have been eaten, the CO2 impact would be the equivalent of taking 1 in 4 cars off the road.
We have been discussing the use of Milk in the household. There are alternate arguments about how is the most effective way of using milk for your carbon footprint.
If you use plastic bottles and recycle there is no argument that the carbon footprint is lower than no recycling.
However if you use Glass Bottles then these can be washed and refilled. We have found that these can be delivered to your doorstep
For Malmesbury he delivers Mon-Sat. We just have delivers on Mon, Wed, Fri so you can have as few or many as you need.
1 pint of milk delivered in a glass bottle is 58p
They also do juices in glass bottles, we get orange and grapefruit.
